Lit Circle Blog

Korrina the main character is trying to stay loyal to the Germans. Hearing her mother talk about how she doesn't care about whats going to happen makes Korrina angry. She has this thought about turning her mother in for even talking like that. Then her parents make the choice to hide Jews behind her wardrobe. It angers her but she soon learns to get over it. The Gestapo (the officers who come and check if Jews are in the house) come to check Korinnas house in the middle of the night. Korrina has this fear of getting caught, now she knows she cannot be loyal if there are Jews in the house.

The conflict in this book is man vs self. I know this because Korrina is deciding with herself if she should turn in her parents or not. Also she wants to be loyal to German but she has Jews behind her wardrobe, she already knows to herself she has betrayed the German. In the story it says "Hadn't she recently told her mother she had nothing to fear from anyone  because she was a loyal German? Now she was a traitor and it seemed she feared almost everyone". It also says "'And our Führer is going to do all this?' 'Of course' Frae Rehme put down her sewing 'At whose expense? At what cost?' Korrina stood up 'Mother, I can't believe your talking like this!'"

Holocaust Response

Many people stood bystanders in the Holocaust because they didn't say anything to help and stick up for Jews, so they thought they didn't think it was okay to have a right to say anything now. I believe they stood quiet because if they stood up for a Jew, they had the fear of being killed. Jews resisted against the Nazi's because they were tired of being treated horribly in the ghettos. They resisted by rising up and attacking the Nazi's in the ghettos, shooting at them, and shooting at their tanks. I might have been a bystander because if they're not bothering me, I won't do much, I would try keeping myself alive. But, at the same time, I would be an up stander because I like to help people when I'm happy, and if we make it through the whole war with them alive, I would feel happiness because I helped someone who could've died.

Girl Stolen pt. 2

Cheyenne, being blind, is in the middle of nowhere with 4 men. One, helping her feel comfortable, feeding her, letting her feel comfortable. Second, always touching her when no one is around. Third, absolutely doesn't care about her, leaves her alone, just wants ransom money. Fourth, controls everyone, not afraid to hurt whoever gets in the way. Griffin, the son of Roy, is one year older then Cheyenne and helps her try to escape. Cheyenne doesn't know he's willing to help though.

The point of view in this book is third person. I know this because it calls them out as there names, not as "he or she". It is like someone outside of the story is telling it, a narrator, not one of the characters. There was so many quotes that it got  me confused most of the time, but I think I got it. It says in the story "one thing Cheyenne hadn't thought about," and "she knew Griffin had no idea what she was doing."

Girl Stolen

The book I am reading is Girl Stolen. It is about this girl, Cheyenne who tells her stepmother if she can stay in the car while she goes shopping. Then someone comes into the car real fast and drives off.  The person stealing the car didn't even know Cheyenne was in the back seat. She scares him and he explains that he only wanted the car. But if he only wanted the car, why doesn't he let her go? He can, but he can't, because he can let her go, and she can call police. Also, Cheyenne couldn't, because she's blind.

In the book there is an Aha Moment. I know this because it says "It was a thousand little things that told Cheyenne something was wrong. Even the way the door closed hasn't sounded right. Too fast and too hard for Danielle. The breathing was all wrong too, speeded up and harsh. Cheyenne sniffled. The smell of cigarettes. But Danielle didn't smoke and, as a nurse, couldn't stand anyone who did. There was no war the person driving the car was her stepmom." This is important because Cheyenne is now in danger. She will need a way to escape without getting caught. She's also blind, so it will make it harder.

The Fault In Our Stars pt. 2

In this book Augustus takes Hazel to Amsterdam. They get this dinner by the author. But the author isn't as good as he seems. In my opinion he had the most awful attitude. Especially that he drinks, just makes it worse. Even though things didn't go as planned, Hazel still got her first kiss. It was the cutest way to! I really do like this book so far. Its so cute how things are set up.

The plot of this book started when Hazel met Augustus in the cancer help group AKA "in the heart of Jesus". Then, Augustus reads Hazels favorite book An Imperial Affliction which never as an ending! Augustus then emails Peter Van Houten's assistant to meet Augustus and Hazel in Amsterdam to speak about the never lasting ending in An Imperial Affliction. But once they get there, the author is drinking and his acting like a real jerk. He talks about how people pity diagnosed children. Then Hazel yells and him and curses, he then kicks them out. His assistant Lidewij, then comes running looking for them and invites them to see Anne Franks house. Hazel has a tough time walking up the steps because its hard to breath since they're no elevator. Once they seen the whole house Hazel and Augustus finally kiss in front of everyone at the top. They then finish, leave, and take a walk. Augustus sits Hazel down. And tells her that he has cancer again.

Poem and Article

In this article, Bangladesh rescue operation near end; collapse death toll at 1127, the argument is that disasters like buildings burning keep happening. I know this because in the article is says "Bangladesh has been plagued by fires and collapses of sweatshop-type factories that supply large U.S. and European retail chain." I think people shouldn't be working in these kinda shops. Make the building more safer so the workers can have a better environment. Let the workers leave when needed. To save their own lives. In this article knowing that three managers kept the workers from leaving the burning building was kinda upsetting. What did they even want them to do? There was no point in keeping them there if everything was burning.

In the poem the argument is that these workers have no rest, they get tired out, and it happens everyday. I know this because it says " The clock in the shop never rests." "But suddenly the whistle, the 'boss' sounds the alarm! I lose my mind, I forget who I am" Throughout the whole story its the same thing, saying how they're a machine. The poem is different from the article because in the poem its from a persons point of view and the article shows facts that happened. In the poem it affects how I feel because it shows their feelings but in the article I understood what had happened with the buildings.

The Fault in Our Stars

In the amazing book The Fault In Our Stars, a unique girl named Hazel Grace spends her days at home. Not like any other teenager though. She has cancer. She gets put in all these help groups that she's tired of going to. But one day, she met this boy, and she actually likes him. He asks her to a date, and then they get along. They text each other, and hang out with each other, and slowly fall in love. Augustus, the boy, soon wants to take Hazel to where the author of her favorite book is.

The genre of my book is romance and realistic fiction. I know this because in the story they show Augustus doing anything to be with Hazel. In the story it says "'Augustus,' I said. 'Really. You don't have to do this.' 'Sure I do,' he said 'I found my wish.'". He gave up his wish for Hazel, on what she wanted. I know this is a realistic  fiction book because people have cancer and go through some of the same problems Hazel does.

Mockingjay

The third book to Hunger Games. I really think the third book isn't that interesting compared to the first. They're in a new place after the second book. Gale is at least there with her.  She's not going to be alone in this. But for me its really confusing.

In Mockingjay there is an internal conflict. Katniss has this love for Peeta. She's worries about him because she doesn't know where she is after Gale saved her. Then she need to also worry about the rebellion district. Which worries her more. I feel like the theme is if you love someone, let them go. Katniss needs to worry about the rebellion.

Should they keep teaching cursive?

They should keep teaching cursive in third grade. We learned cursive, many people before us have learned cursive to. I think all this technology is bad for the kids now. Its all typing were everyone is just the same. The way people write is makes a person unique. I think cursive is way more better then print, because its way nicer. This article makes me want to write cursive more so it won't be forgotten, it may be ugly, but at least its still here.

"Lemon Brown" Blog

My reaction to Lemon Brown was that I felt bad that he had to keep moving and traveling because people wanted his treasure. This story connects to homelessness because Lemon Brown never really had a home, he kept moving. The fact that his son died in war, was pretty surprising. He lost his son, that his wife took away from him, thats sad. Greg changed throughout the story because in the beginning he was mad at his dad, but in the end, he realized his dad really cared.

Catching Fire

The ending of this book is so amazing. You would never expect something to happen, the twist is so thrilling. The fact that Katniss made allies, is another twist because she's so independent you would think she would make any. In the arena she had to save herself and her fake husband, Peeta. I need to read the next book to see what happens.

The point of view in this story is first person. I know this because Katniss is telling the story. She uses the words "Its my mockingjay". Most books I read are like this. Divergent, Hunger Games, and the series of them. I like them because it shows us what they think and how they see things.

Catching Fire Summary

Part two of the futuristic book Hunger Games, is Catching Fire. Where now there is only one girl and two boys to pick from to be tributes. Katniss, the only girl, has to go back into the place that is her biggest nightmare. Will her family be okay with her gone? She has met people who are more advanced. Where there is more dressing up since it is her second time. But before all that, she had to live with the fact of the last Arena. Going around districts giving the same speech over and over again. Having more rules to her district. Now being trained for the second arena, with her fake husband. The pain of knowing will he be killed or not. Katniss will be struggling badly.

The main character of this book is Katniss. She is very scared in the beginning of the book. With all these new rules and more guards. She's being very careful about what she does because the things she used to do, could've sent her to jail, or the Capitol could've killed her. In the book it says "and I know theres nothing I could ever do to change this," that has to be one of the worst feelings to feel.
